Finding community was top of mind when Herb and Maxine Gurk moved with their young family from Philadelphia to Princeton in 1960. They immediately found that community in their Riverside neighborhood, in the active Princeton Jewish community, and especially in The Jewish Center. It became a hub of activity for them, a place to make new friends and to live their lives Jewishly.

Herb and Maxine quickly became integral to The Jewish Center family. Not only were they regular attendees at services and programs of all kinds, but they were active on committees throughout their lives, and lent their talents and love of the synagogue to leadership roles. At one point Herb served as President of the board, and Maxine served as president of what was then called The Women’s Division – at the same time! Herb and Maxine’s three children, Lisa, David, and Rebecca, each spent teenage years working at TJC, a testament to the values instilled by their parents.

Holding a special place in their lives and in their hearts, the Gurks felt that it was important to honor The Jewish Center with a legacy gift, helping to ensure a vibrant future for the Princeton Jewish community.
