Harold Borkan

Harold Borkan, lifelong member of Princeton Jewish Center (1956-2022), grew up in a traditional Jewish home in which Friday night was celebrated with candles and his mother’s special Shabbat meal. The family had moved from a neighborhood where Jews were not welcome, to a Jewish neighborhood in Elizabeth, NJ. It was a happy childhood and being Jewish was an integral part.

When Harold moved to Princeton, the Jewish Center was in a one room building on Olden Avenue, large enough for the small Jewish community. Harold was a part of that early period of growth. Among the many positions he held over time, one was Chair of the Education Committee, and he also served as Treasurer.

The Jewish Center was important to Harold and his family. Through their home and the Jewish Center, he and Jean made Judaism important to their children. Harold excelled at whatever he undertook and was recognized as a natural leader. These outstanding qualities were combined with kindness, and a genuine interest in other people. Giving a legacy gift was meaningful to him as a continuation of that support and caring.
